The Memphis Academy of Civic Engagement is a seven-week course sponsored by the Memphis City Council.
Educate and Inform: We provide accessible and comprehensive education on civic processes, governmental structures, and social issues to enhance civic literacy among individuals of all backgrounds. By promoting understanding and awareness, we empower people to make informed decisions and take meaningful action.
Through our program, we strive to foster an engaged and empowered community. That are actively involved in shaping their communities, influencing policies, and driving positive change.
Encourage Active Participation: We inspire and encourage individuals to actively engage in their communities by volunteering, joining local organizations, participating in grassroots initiatives, and public service. We foster a culture of active citizenship, where everyone is encouraged to contribute their unique skills, talents, and experiences to address community challenges.

As a council member, JB is currently Vice Chair of the City Council and serves as Chair of the Public Works, Solid Waste & General Services Committee, Vice Chair of the Planning & Zoning Committee, and the council liaison for the Urban Art Commission and the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission.
TaJuan Stout Mitchell has given 25 years to public service while working nine to five for social work agencies and rearing a family with her husband of 32 years.
She has been elected four times to the City Board of Education and Memphis City Council and worked on the Executive Staff of four Mayors.
She was the first African American woman appointed to an Executive Appointed Position in 1982.
Sherica Hymes is the Founder & C.E.O. of Polished Consulting, L.L.C., and the Total Woman Summit. As a thought leader and Executive Coach, Sherica has been described as a woman that "expands humans”.
